BREASTFEEDING BOUDOIR PHOTOGRAPHY
BREASTFEEDING BOUDOIR
Breastfeeding boudoir is a type of maternity boudoir session I offer. Those not familiar with this new term will usually refer to it as simply breastfeeding photography. Breastfeeding photography is also referred to as breastfeeding portraits, as most pictures are shot from the waist up. However, some photographers, including myself, shoot full-body pictures as well.
Breastfeeding boudoir is a fairly new and emerging genre of maternity photography. The taboo around breastfeeding is slowly going away thanks to movements prompting acceptance of breastfeeding. This is partially due to Instagram allowing images of women breastfeeding, even if they are showing their breasts uncovered and uncensored.
Breastfeeding is an intimate & beautiful bonding experience. It deserves to be photographed and celebrated. By having a breastfeeding photoshoot, you’ll join a movement of like-minded mothers pushing for the acceptance of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding has long been seen as shameful, especially in front of others. As always, driven by society’s push towards controlling women’s bodies and capitalizing on it. For example, some men believe a woman’s breasts are meant for them and not for babies. Baby food & powder corporations capitalized on this by making women spend money on their products, further pushing the view that babies should be fed using their products and not breasts. These companies also preach that women on the go don’t have time for their babies, pushing the deception even more. Breastmilk is natural, free, and most importantly, a great way to bond. This is why I am also part of the breastfeeding acceptance movement. I use my photography skills as another way to help the movement, a way for women to free themselves and be comfortable with their bodies and breasts.
BREASTFEEDING PHOTOGRAPHY
Breastfeeding photography is one of those moments that is really special to capture. Documenting a quiet, powerful stage of motherhood. That deep bond between a mom and her baby that doesn’t need words to be understood. Just the way she holds them close, the small glances, the gentle touches, the shared warmth that passes between them. My job is to make sure that warmth and connection actually show up in the photos.
We work with soft natural light whenever we can. Early morning or that golden late afternoon light that fills the room and makes everything feel a little gentler. The baby stays tucked in against her, and I move around quietly, watching for the real moments. The tiny smile that flickers across their face. The way her hand rests on their back. Eyelashes fluttering as they drift. It’s not about creating some perfect scene. It’s about being present for what’s already there and letting the photos hold onto that feeling.
Breastfeeding photography is about honoring a warm & valuable part of early motherhood. The way a mom shows up for her baby with so much love and care, even when she’s exhausted. Those quiet moments when she’s nourishing & protecting that bond. It’s vulnerable & powerful at the same time, and the photos help hold onto both.
In a breastfeeding boudoir session we’re trying to capture the actual feeling between them. That deep, wordless connection. It takes real sensitivity and care. Paying attention to the light, moving gently so she feels safe, and noticing the story she carries in the way she holds her baby and looks at them.
These images become something lasting. A kind of love letter from mom to child that she can come back to later. The camera catches the small glances, the way their bodies fit together, the softness in her face when she’s fully in it. It’s meaningful work because you’re helping preserve a real piece of their beginning together, exactly as it was.
The breastfeeding boudoir session like any boudoir session can take place in any private setting. Whether it is in the comfort of your own home or an outdoor location. The styles can also range from fine art to casual. I offer different customizable packages.
